Join select high school partners on an adventure to the indigenous community of Zurite in the Sacred Valley of Peru. Students will travel to Lima, take a domestic flight to Cusco and acclimate to the highlands in the ancient Incan city, full of history, culture and wonder. Afterwards, we will be visiting Zurite to learn about the puna grasslands and the importance of these ecological zones for the health of regional watersheds.
Exploring sustainability in the highlands of Peru
Dates: June 14-23, 2025
Location: Zurite in Peru’s Sacred Valley (1.5 hours from Cusco)
Cost: $3950 (+ medical insurance)
This cost includes roundtrip airfare to Cusco from PDX, all in-country food, transportation, and lodging, all project materials, coordinator staff, bilingual guides, and tours in Machu Picchu and to the historic city of Cusco.
Group Size: 20-25 Participants
Lodging will be provided at hotels in Cusco and Lima, in Zurite, homestay accommodations will be provided by a local family that we have known for several years and who have hosted hundreds of traveling student groups.
The trip activities include the following:
Support research and projects to conserve and protect the upper Ramsuchaka Watershed.
Construct a community project related to water and ecological conservation, and infrastructure that supports the community's needs and interests.
Participate in community based environmental conservation, working alongside families to restore native ecosystems with reforestation and agriculture.
Learn about water resources, hydrology, and governance for high mountain communities.
Explore the ancient city of Cusco, Incan and pre-Incan history and culture of the region
Tour the magical wonder of Machu Picchu
